While Carl Icahn is probably known by the millennials as the guy who argued with Bill Ackman over Herbalife, or for his Apple position or for his investment in Lyft, he has a career that spans back for over 50 years. An activist investor but also businessman and philanthropist. I recently saw an interview he did at the DealBook Conference and if you don’t have time for anything else then do watch the funny true story about ACF he tells at 6:05 in the video (first one listed below) and lasts until 14:00. I’ve also added a few more lengthy videos which are shown below. For more videos on other SuperInvestors click here.
As a leading shareholder activist, Carl Icahn’s efforts have unlocked billions of dollars of shareholder and bondholder value and have improved the competitiveness of American companies… In 1961 Carl began his career on Wall Street. He has gone on to become one of the most well-known and influential investors in America. In 1968, he formed Icahn & Co., a securities firm that focused on arbitrage and options trading. In 1978, he began taking very substantial and sometimes controlling positions in individual companies… His many charitable interests focus primarily on medicine, education and child welfare. In 2012, in recognition of Carl’s gift of $200 million, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine was renamed the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Institute of Genomics was renamed the Icahn Genomics Institute.
